The Ascension of the Lord
“He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand
of the Father.” (Nicene Creed) Each time we recite this creed during Mass,
we proclaim our belief that Jesus ascended from His earthly existence, to a
more divine union with God. It likewise
affirms our faith that we too will someday be raised up to a more complete
relationship with our Creator.
The Feast of the Ascension is
still a holy day of obligation. However,
a few years ago this celebration was transferred to the Sunday following the
feast day in nearly all of the dioceses in the United States, including
Cincinnati.
Perhaps the more appropriate
way to reflect on the ascension is to look beyond the historical date of the
event, and to focus instead on how it impacts our daily life. Christ’s ascension ought to remind us of His
victory over death, not just for Him, but for all of us who believe.
