Prayer to the Holy Spirit

 Prayers

SIGN OF THE CROSS. (With right hand touch forehead) In the name of the Father, (touch center of chest) and of the Son, (touch left and then right shoulders) and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

GLORY BE TO THE FATHER
             Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

BLESSING BEFORE MEALS
            Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive from your goodness, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
(Traditionally thy was substituted for your and bounty for goodness. Many prayers can be said before a meal. This is the prayer most commonly used.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
            Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil. Amen.

HAIL MARY
            Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

ACT OF CONTRITION
            My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.
(Many variations of this prayer are appropriate. This is from the revised Rite of Penance and is used in our books. Each child needs to know some variation of a Prayer of Sorrow)

THE CHURCH IS (marks of the church)
               one- we are one, or united. The Holy Spirit draws Jesus’ followers together as brothers and sisters in one Christian family.
               holy- to be holy mean to be close to God and to do God’s work in the world. It means loving God and caring about all people.
               catholic- means universal. Jesus wants his people, the Church, to welcome and to include people of all kinds, just as he does.
              apostolic- It is founded on the teachings of Jesus and his Apostles. We are called to be apostolic by sharing what we have learned from the Apostles and from other Catholics.

NICENE CREED
          We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
             For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; suffered, died and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

            He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds for the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Beatitudes
(We do not ask that students memorize all of the Beatitudes but rather that they are familiar with them, who gave them to us etc. The following is a brief explanation of the Beatitudes.)
The Beatitudes were given to us by Jesus. They teach us to love God and others, and promise us a place in the kingdom of heaven. Christians believe that they will be happy forever if they live the Beatitudes. They are Jesus’ teachings on how to find everlasting happiness.
    Happy are the poor in spirit. The reign of God is theirs.
    Happy are the sorrowing. They will be comforted.
    Happy are the gentle. They will receive all that God has promised.
    Happy are those who hunger and thirst for justice. They will be satisfied.
    Happy are those who show mercy to others. They will receive mercy.
    Happy are the single-hearted. They will see God.
    Happy are the peacemakers. They will be called children of God.
    Happy are those who are treated unfairly for doing what is right. The reign of God is theirs.
